THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Along with the faculty and staff, the Board of Directors of the Saturday Conservatory of Music (SCM) is proudly looking forward to our 2011-2012 school year! With their complementary backgrounds in music education, business, and community service, the members of the Board support the efforts of the faculty and ensure that the program achieves its mission to provide affordable music instruction to children in the greater Los Angeles area.

Art Mautner, President - Mr. Mautner holds a B.A. degree from UCLA and received his M.A. degree from CSULA.
He taught instrumental music for the L.A. Unified School District for over thirty years. His orchestra at Virgil Junior High School, which consisted of over 100 young musicians during the last twelve years before his retirement, received Superior ratings each year during his tenure.
Mr. Mautner served as the conductor of various Youth Orchestras over a 34 year period of time, including 14 years with the Meremblum Youth Orchestras, first with the Pioneer Orchestra, and the last five with the California Junior Symphony. He became the Conductor of Youth Symphony West in 1979, retiring in 1998 from that position, yet remains active with the Saturday Conservatory of Music.
From 1985 to 1992 he was on the staff at the L.A. County High School for the Arts, and taught the String Methods classes at CSULB and CSULA.
Mr. Mautner is on the Board of the American String Teachers' Association, L.A. Chapter, where he served as the Greater Los Angeles Coordinator of Competitions for 5 years. Maintaining an active private studio of violins and violas, he is an active member of MTAC and has had 2 Young Artist Guild winners, and co-coached the winning VOCE Trio in the Junior and Senior Division Ensembles, which is a statewide competition.
He had conducted a number of Honor Orchestras in the southland, and has presented string clinics in the area, as well as having adjudicated for many public school and organizational festivals. Having over 45 years experience in summer music camps, he was on staff at Idyllwild School of the Arts for twenty years, the last two serving as Conductor of the Junior High Camp. He was the founding Conductor of the Wildwood Music Camp Senior High Orchestra, retiring in 2006.

Glen Kamida - Glen has been a finalist for the Music Center's Bravo Award. Glen teaches in the Torrance Unified School District and he also serves on the Board of Directors for the Wildwood Institute of Music and the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association. He is a seven-time recipient of the PTA Honorary Service Award and he directs his own non-profit organization, the North Torrance Youth Musicians Ensemble, which serves more than 200 students. Glen is a former SCM student and teacher. Glen assists with recruiting and training the Conservatory faculty.

Bonnie Francisco, Secretary - Bonnie is a Conservatory alumna who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from UCLA and works as a construction estimator for a major Southern California general contractor. Bonnie participated in violin classes, string ensembles, and Youth Symphony West before serving the program as librarian, string coach, Board member, and Board Secretary.

Alex Galvan - Alex is another former student of the Conservatory. His professional experience includes music composition and performance. He was previously an Assistant Professor of Music at Cal Poly Pomona. He is currently on the faculty of Citrus College.

Lorinda Zamora - Lorinda is the parent representative, voicing opinions and interests of the Conservatory's current students. She and her husband Dave have been bringing their children to SCM for seven years and their two sons are students at the Orange County High School of the Arts.

Gary Gee - Gary has served on the Board for over 20 years. He is the Violin Department Quality Assurance Manager at Johnny Thompson Music. He is a community activist who helped to restore the orchestra program in the Alhambra Unified School District and his activities as a community liaison for Johnny Thompson Music put him in regular contact with community leaders who are supportive of the arts.

Louis Figueroa - Louis earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theater Arts from Cal State L.A. and he works for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. On Saturdays, he manages the Conservatory's bookstore and in 2005, he joined the Board.

Jeff Bruce, Treasurer - Jeff is the son of Conservatory founder Carl Bruce. He has served on the Board of Directors for 10 years. He was responsible for transferring SCM's endowment fund to the Pasadena Community Foundation.

Pearly Mautner, Office Manager - Pearly, newly elected Board Member, earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Cal State L.A. and Master in Social Work from Cal State Long Beach. She received a Certificate in Music from Glendale Community College, with emphasis in vocal music. She has participated in vocal technique classes and has performed in the choirs at Glendale College, Orange Coast College, and Cypress College. She is currently working as a social worker at Chinatown Service Center, a non-profit organization.
